The vagina normally has protective
bacteria. Sometimes this normal bacteria can be killed by antibiotics.
A woman could have a urinary infection, take antibiotics and unknowingly
cause her good bacteria to die. This is one of the main causes of yeast
infections, but there are others.
Other causes can include
an injury to the inner vagina, a suppressed immune system, pregnancy
(and taking birth control pills), and diabetes. Using a douche also
causes an increased risk for a woman to develop a vaginal yeast infection.
Yeast infections are not
considered a sexually transmitted infection (STD). However, a vaginal
yeast infection can be spread to a man. The man will develop symptoms
of skin irritation of the penis from a yeast infection after sexual
intercourse with an infected partner. The reason that it is not considered
to be a sexually transmitted disease is that the bacteria is naturally
occurring, even in women who are celibate.
No matter what causes a yeast
infection, treatment can be needed for both men and women in order to
clear up the infection. There are yeast infection remedies, such as
the products that are listed on this page, that you can buy online.
You can also make an appointment with your doctor in order to get a
prescription.
